Move of the Week: Double Leg Takedown

Today we will be starting a new segment called move of the week.  This will occur weekly, as the name implies, until all the moves are shown then we will start showing combinations, strategies, set-ups, counters etc. etc.  Each week we will include a video of the move being performed and instructions on how to do the move and on some occasions some background about the move.

This weeks move is perhaps the simplest and most well-known move in wrestling.  The Double-Leg Take down.  This move is used in the neutral position or, on some occasions when coming up on bottom or trying to hold your opponent down while on top.

The double leg Take down is when you get an opennet on the ground by grabbing both legs and performing a finish there are hundreds of finishes.  Here are the steps:

  1. Start off in Neutral with your foot on one side of the tape
  2. and your oppenot on the oppisite side

2. Next do a set-up, There are hundreds to chose from a few are:
a.Elbow Grab (when you grab your opponets elbow, the one oppisite of your arm in a way that they turn                                                                            toward you
b. fake then shoot
Any of the above will work or any other move that you may know to put your opponet in a better position that you can shoot from

3. Next grab both ways there dozens of ways to do this such as cutting from a single to a double or just going for both legs and pushing you're oppenet to the ground.

4.Finish the takedown.  Wether its a drive (when you push through your opponet until they hit the ground) or a lift (in which you lift your oppenent up and then drop them to the ground in a safe way as defined by wrestling rules and judged by the reffere or set them down in a way in which you can gain control.

5.Get your two points.  Depending on your position this can be spinning or just getting on top and letting the referee see it.  This move, if done correctly, is worth two points hence the saying "get your two".

Here is a video demonstrating a double leg takedown:

Enjoy,
